OMORPHO G-Vest Icon HYROX Review

HYROX training has a habit of exposing weaknesses you didn’t know you had. You can be comfortable running a fast 5K, strong enough to move heavy sleds and confident on the SkiErg, but put everything together and the accumulated fatigue tells a very different story. That is what makes training for HYROX so different from simply getting fitter or stronger. You need to be able to run when your legs are tired, move efficiently when your heart rate is high and maintain good movement patterns long after the novelty has worn off.

That is where the new OMORPHO G-Vest Icon HYROX comes in. Designed in partnership with HYROX, it is a weighted vest intended specifically for hybrid training. Rather than loading a large amount of weight onto a few points around the body, OMORPHO uses its MicroLoad™ system to distribute smaller weights across the torso. The idea is simple: make your training harder without making movement feel completely different.

We have put the vest through its paces to find out whether it actually makes sense as part of a HYROX training programme.

What Is the OMORPHO G-Vest Icon HYROX?

The G-Vest Icon HYROX is a special-edition version of OMORPHO’s G-Vest, developed specifically in partnership with HYROX. It is immediately recognisable thanks to the official HYROX branding and black-and-yellow colourway, but the more important details are underneath. The vest uses OMORPHO’s MicroLoad™ technology, which places small weights across the torso rather than concentrating the load in one area.

The men’s version starts at 10lb, or around 4.5kg, and can be increased to 20lb with additional G-Pack weight inserts. The women’s model starts at 6lb and can be increased to 12lb. At £299 for the men’s version and £279 for the women’s model, it is certainly not a cheap piece of training equipment. That puts the emphasis firmly on whether the design offers something that a conventional weighted vest doesn’t.

The G-Vest takes a relatively low-profile approach. It has a front zip, adjustable sizing cords around the torso and elasticated side cords designed to keep the vest close to the body.

Once fitted correctly, the vest feels considerably more integrated than the traditional weighted vests you might associate with gym training. That matters when you start running.

Running With the OMORPHO G-Vest

Running with additional weight is one of the most obvious ways to use a weighted vest for HYROX training, particularly when you are trying to replicate the feeling of running on tired legs.

The first thing you notice is obviously the additional load. A 10lb vest isn’t insignificant, particularly once you have already accumulated several kilometres.

But the design means the weight doesn’t feel as though it is pulling you backwards or sitting heavily on your shoulders.

That is important because HYROX requires you to transition repeatedly between running and functional stations. You don’t want your training equipment encouraging a completely different running technique.

The G-Vest is designed to add resistance while allowing natural movement, which is one of the central principles behind OMORPHO’s MicroLoad™ technology.

For HYROX training, that makes sense. You can use the vest for shorter running intervals, longer easy runs or selected hybrid sessions without having to completely change the way you move.

Using the G-Vest for HYROX Training

The most interesting application isn’t necessarily running alone. It is using the vest to add resistance to movements that already feature in hybrid training. Think walking lunges, squats, step-ups, burpees and bodyweight conditioning. These are movements where a relatively small increase in load can make a noticeable difference once fatigue starts building. For HYROX athletes, this could make the vest particularly useful during specific conditioning sessions. The important word here is specific.

I wouldn’t treat the G-Vest as something you need to wear for every workout. Adding weight to every run or every functional movement isn’t automatically going to make you a better HYROX athlete. Instead, it makes more sense as another tool in the training box: something you can introduce during selected sessions to increase the demand without simply adding more volume.

The Details

The OMORPHO G-Vest Icon HYROX is priced at £299 for the men’s model and £279 for the women’s model. Additional G-Pack inserts allow the men’s vest to increase from 10lb to 20lb and the women’s version from 6lb to 12lb. That makes it a premium piece of training equipment, and the price means it is unlikely to be an impulse purchase for most recreational athletes.

The argument for the G-Vest is therefore less about replacing every other piece of gym equipment and more about having a specialised tool for hybrid training. If you are training for your first HYROX, the G-Vest could be useful, but you probably don’t need to make it the foundation of your programme.

For more experienced HYROX athletes, it has a clearer purpose. Once you have established your running, strength and station-specific training, adding controlled resistance can provide another way to challenge the body without simply doing more repetitions.

OMORPHO G-Vest Icon HYROX: The Verdict

The appeal of the OMORPHO G-Vest Icon HYROX is that it doesn’t try to turn HYROX training into something completely different. Instead, it takes a familiar training tool and focuses heavily on how the resistance is distributed across the body.

The 10lb men’s starting weight provides enough additional resistance to make running and bodyweight movements more demanding, while the ability to increase the load to 20lb gives experienced athletes room to progress.

For HYROX athletes, the biggest benefit is versatility. You can use it for running, functional movements or hybrid sessions where fatigue is part of the objective. At £299, it is an expensive addition to a training kitbag. But if HYROX is a major part of your training and you are looking for a way to introduce additional resistance without wearing a bulky, unstable vest, the G-Vest Icon HYROX is an interesting option.

It won’t replace running, strength work, SkiErg sessions or the rest of your HYROX training. But used selectively, it could make those sessions considerably harder. And sometimes, that is exactly what you need.
