News: Jersey Mike’s Is Coming to the UK

London’s sandwich scene is about to get a major American import. Jersey Mike’s, the US sub chain with more than 3,300 locations across America and Canada, is officially making its UK debut, with its first restaurant set to open on Argyll Street, just off Oxford Street, in late autumn 2026.

If you’ve travelled to the States, there’s a good chance you already know the name. If not, you’re about to become familiar with it. Founded on the Jersey Shore more than 70 years ago, Jersey Mike’s has developed a fiercely loyal following for its East Coast-style subs, freshly sliced meats and cheeses, and a signature finishing touch known among regulars as ‘the juice’.

And London is only the beginning. Three additional restaurants in central London are expected to follow shortly after the first opening, marking the start of the brand’s wider expansion across the UK and Ireland.

What Is Jersey Mike’s?

Founded in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, Jersey Mike’s started life as a neighbourhood sandwich shop serving classic East Coast-style subs. Since then, it has grown into one of America’s best-known sandwich chains, building its reputation around freshly prepared ingredients and subs made to order.

The concept is straightforward, but it’s the attention to detail that has helped turn the brand into a US favourite. Meats and cheeses are sliced fresh in front of customers, vegetables are prepared fresh, and bread is baked throughout the day. Rather than relying on pre-assembled sandwiches, the focus is on making each order there and then.

The result is a distinctly American approach to the humble sandwich, with generous fillings, freshly sliced deli meats and soft bread at the centre of the experience.

The Secret Is in ‘The Juice’

For Jersey Mike’s fans, ordering a sub is about more than choosing your fillings. There’s also the question of how you finish it.

Enter ‘the juice’, the brand’s signature combination of red wine vinegar and an oil blend, splashed over the sandwich before it is wrapped up. It adds acidity and richness to the fillings, giving the subs their distinctive flavour.

Then there’s Mike’s Way, the classic order for anyone who wants the full Jersey Mike’s experience. It combines onions, lettuce and tomatoes with the oil blend, red wine vinegar and spices.

It’s a simple combination, but one that has become central to the brand’s identity. Jersey Mike’s has built its reputation around doing the basics well, with its tagline, ‘A Sub Above’, summing up its approach to fresh preparation and quality ingredients.

Whether London diners embrace the full Mike’s Way experience remains to be seen, but the signature finishing touch is likely to be one of the first things curious newcomers want to try.

The Story

Behind the business is an entrepreneurial story that feels quintessentially American. Jersey Mike’s founder and chairman, Peter Cancro, started working at the original sandwich shop when he was just 14. Three years later, aged 17, he bought the business, turning the neighbourhood shop he had grown up around into the foundation of a national brand.

More than seven decades after the original opened, Cancro is now bringing Jersey Mike’s to Britain, introducing a new audience to the sandwiches that helped build the business. The brand’s growth has been considerable. With more than 3,300 locations across the US and Canada, Jersey Mike’s has moved well beyond its Jersey Shore roots while continuing to position freshly prepared subs and customer service at the heart of its offering.

Jersey Mike’s

The first UK restaurant will open on Argyll Street, a short walk from Oxford Circus  The opening will be followed by three more central London restaurants shortly afterwards, with plans for a much wider rollout across the UK and Ireland. The company has ambitions to open hundreds of additional restaurants, although further locations and opening dates have yet to be confirmed.

Peter Cancro, founder and chairman of Jersey Mike’s Subs, said: “Jersey Mike’s has always been about making a great sub, taking care of our customers and giving back to the communities we’re part of. I’m incredibly excited to bring that same spirit to the UK.”

The TONE Take

The UK launch of Jersey Mike’s is another sign that American fast-casual food culture continues to find an audience on this side of the Atlantic. While London already has plenty of places to grab a sandwich, Jersey Mike’s arrives with something that has taken decades to establish in the States: a recognisable identity, a loyal following and a very particular way of doing things.

The freshly sliced meats and cheeses will be central to the appeal, but it’s the details that could make the difference. The oil and vinegar combination, the Mike’s Way ordering ritual and the focus on preparation give the chain a personality beyond simply putting fillings between two slices of bread.

Whether it can replicate its American success in London is the bigger question. For now, the first opening on Argyll Street will be the one to watch, with three more restaurants set to follow and a much wider UK rollout on the horizon.

One thing is certain: you won’t need to cross the Atlantic to get your hands on a Jersey Mike’s sub much longer.
