Orion By Alex Webb Review: Refined Modern British Dining

Some restaurants rely on spectacle to make an impression. Others allow exceptional ingredients, thoughtful cooking and genuine hospitality to speak for themselves. Tucked away in a quieter corner of Wimbledon, Orion by Alex Webb falls firmly into the latter category, delivering an elegant dining experience that feels both sophisticated and refreshingly unpretentious.

Led by MasterChef: The Professionals winner Alex Webb, Orion showcases modern British cooking with classical French influences, placing premium seasonal produce at the heart of every dish. While the restaurant undoubtedly feels like a destination worthy of celebrating life’s special occasions, it also retains the warmth and familiarity of a neighbourhood favourite, making it just as appealing for an indulgent weekend dinner as it is for a milestone celebration.

Signature Starters Full of Character

Dinner began with a beautifully presented pre-meal pairing of Champagne alongside a delicate tuna tartare. Light, vibrant and exceptionally fresh, the tartare acted as the perfect palate cleanser before the main menu unfolded.

The quality of the fish was immediately evident, allowing its natural flavour to take centre stage without unnecessary embellishment. It set the tone for a menu that places confidence in outstanding ingredients rather than overcomplication.

For the opening course, Alex Webb’s signature Lobster & Prawn Toast with black sesame, lime, chilli and carrot purée proved an instant highlight.

Wonderfully crisp with an irresistibly crunchy exterior, every bite delivered layers of sweet shellfish balanced by subtle citrus and gentle warmth from the chilli. The silky carrot purée added richness and depth without overpowering the seafood, creating a dish that felt indulgent yet remarkably well balanced.

Alongside it, the Smoked Fillet of Beef Tartare with salted egg yolk and grilled sourdough demonstrated exactly why tartare remains a timeless classic when executed properly.

The portion was generous, allowing the quality of the beef to shine through. Rich, deeply savoury and beautifully seasoned, the smoked element added another layer of complexity while the salted egg yolk delivered luxurious creaminess throughout. Paired together, both starters offered contrasting flavours that complemented one another perfectly, particularly on a warm summer evening.

Seasonal Mains That Showcase Technique

The main courses continued the restaurant’s impressive consistency.

One choice came in the form of the day’s special, a beautifully cooked monkfish served in a velvety creamy sauce. Firm, meaty and wonderfully fresh, the fish retained its delicate texture while the sauce enhanced rather than masked its flavour.

The original choice of fillet steak had unfortunately sold out by the evening service, leading to a rib-eye instead. It proved to be an excellent substitute. Cooked exactly as a rib-eye should be, the steak arrived beautifully juicy with a deep smoky char and generous marbling that delivered richness in every mouthful.

While both dishes showcased very different styles of cooking, each highlighted the kitchen’s confidence with premium produce and careful execution.

Sides Worth Ordering

The accompaniments deserved just as much attention as the main dishes themselves.

Alex Webb’s signature Slow-Cooked Butter Thyme Potatoes with Parmesan were easily among the standout dishes of the evening. Layer upon layer of finely sliced potato had been carefully cooked to create something incredibly indulgent without feeling heavy. Crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy within, each bite was packed with buttery richness and savoury Parmesan, demonstrating just how memorable a potato dish can become in the right hands.

The Minted Buttered New Potatoes offered a more traditional alternative. Simple, comforting and perfectly executed, they paired effortlessly with both the fish and steak, allowing the quality of the main ingredients to remain the focus while providing a classic British accompaniment.

Wines and Desserts That Finish Beautifully

The wine list offers plenty to explore, alongside a carefully curated cocktail menu designed to complement the food.

A crisp Picpoul de Pinet proved an excellent pairing throughout dinner, its bright acidity cutting through the richness of both seafood and beef with ease.

Dessert arrived in the form of an elegant Coconut Parfait with white chocolate dome, mango sorbet, mango and lime salsa, and rum gel. The dish balanced tropical sweetness with refreshing citrus and subtle bitterness, preventing it from becoming overly rich despite its luxurious presentation.

Accompanying the dessert was a glass of 2015 Lions de Suduiraut Sauternes, whose honeyed sweetness provided a wonderfully indulgent finale. Even after a generously paced meal, the dessert wine offered that satisfying sweet finish without requiring an overly heavy dessert, making it an excellent recommendation for those looking to round off the evening.

Elegant Hospitality in an Intimate Setting

Beyond the food, much of Orion’s appeal lies in its atmosphere.

The dining room feels understated, elegant and quietly luxurious, tucked away from the bustle of Wimbledon in a location that immediately encourages guests to slow down and enjoy the experience. Rather than feeling overly formal, the restaurant strikes an impressive balance between fine dining and neighbourhood charm.

Service was equally memorable throughout the evening. The team demonstrated genuine knowledge of both the menu and wine list, confidently guiding diners through each course while remaining warm, approachable and personable. Natural conversation and attentive hospitality elevated the experience without ever becoming intrusive, reinforcing the sense that every guest is genuinely welcomed rather than simply served.
