There were couples on date nights, groups of friends celebrating birthdays, and smaller tables lingering over wine. It felt lively but never loud, social yet still personal.

We began the evening with a bottle of wine, which set the pace for the meal. The wine list is well considered, and the service throughout was genuinely warm and attentive. There was no sense of being rushed, something that can be surprisingly rare in central London restaurants. Instead, courses arrived at an easy rhythm that allowed the evening to unfold naturally.

We opted for the tasting menu, which is one of the most affordable and enjoyable ways to experience Ayllu’s Nikkei offering. The crab tacos were light, fresh and beautifully balanced, while the wagyu beef was rich, indulgent and expertly cooked. These additions elevated the experience and highlighted how confidently the kitchen handles both delicate seafood and premium cuts of meat.

Music and Atmosphere

Music plays an important role in the overall atmosphere at Ayllu, and it is handled with restraint and taste. During our visit, a live Spanish guitarist played in the restaurant. What stood out most was how seamlessly the music blended into the space. It never overpowered conversation or drew attention away from the table. In fact, if you were not looking directly at the bar, you could easily assume it was part of the background soundtrack. It added warmth and texture to the room rather than becoming a performance, which felt thoughtful and intentional.

A Sweet Finish

Instead of a traditional dessert, we finished with espresso martinis, and they were excellent. Smooth, well balanced and indulgent in exactly the right way, they felt like a fitting end to the meal. For those who enjoy drawing the evening out rather than rushing to the final course, this is a detail that will be particularly appreciated.

If you are not quite ready to head home after dinner, the evening can continue upstairs at Smyths Bar & Grill. On our visit, there was a live violinist and a DJ, creating a relaxed but elegant atmosphere for a final drink or two. It felt like a natural extension of the night rather than a sharp change of pace, and a lovely way to round things off.

Ayllu manages to strike a balance that many restaurants aim for but few achieve. It is romantic without being exclusive, lively without being overwhelming, and refined without feeling formal.
